Verizon Treo 700p MR Update a Complete Disaster!!

So Treo 700p users waited patiently for an update for the slightly troubled smart phone. Some of the issues were bluetooth connectivity, freezing after a text message and several other annoying little issues that you would not expect from a $500 phone. And yes I understand that technology is not perfect but I do expect the device to perform the functions touted by its manufacturer. So after a little over a year of waiting…Palm releases the MR update for my precious little phone. Now, I should have known that installing this update on my device wasn’t going to be one of my brightest ideas but I forged ahead and did it anyway. It only took the prescribed 30 minutes to download and then disaster struck. My Treo 700p never to be the same again. Of course I quickly did a google search only to discover that I was not the only Treo user hit by the Update Mack Truck. My phone…now has a mind of its own. It rings when no one is calling like its suddenly possessed. It freezes for longer periods of time after a text message sometimes forcing me to perform a soft reset. It shows text messages as pending even though they’ve been delivered. It doesn’t show the call waiting caller id when I am on another call. I could go on…but you get the idea. And before you ask..yes I have performed a hard reset. Several of them in fact. All have failed to heal my broken phone.

So I put in a call to Verizon Wireless to let explain the issue I am having with the phone since the update. Of course they quickly want to blame any issues on any third party software I may have installed…which clearly isn’t the issue. The Customer Service Rep then asks me if I have performed a hard rest and I tell him I have…several of them and it doesn’t fix the problem. He then has me…wait for it…explain the hard reset process to him like I have no idea what I am doing. I guess he completely missed the part where I explained to him that my phone was working much better than this BEFORE the update. Alas…I humor him and explain the process and he confirms that yes I did in fact perform the hard reset properly. Gee…thanks!!!

He doesn’t know what else he can do but call Palm and see if they have a resolution for this. The Verizon guy explains the problem to the Palm guy and the Palm guys solution is for me to do a what?!!! You guessed it a hard reset!!! GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! Doesn’t anyone listen anymore or are they all little programmed drones following a script. I was just getting ready to lose my temper at this point when the Verizon guy tells the Palm guy that we’ve already been over that and it doesn’t work (Verizon guy just won back some brownie points). So Palm Guy tells Verizon Guy that for some reason the MR update did not download correctly on the phone and they are going to have to issue me a new phone.

Finally…we’re getting somewhere. So Verizon Guy tells me that I can expect my new phone in 2-3 days when I interrupted him to ask…is this a new phone or a refurbished phone. He tells me that it will be a refurbished phone. Excuse me?!!!!! Did I hear you correctly? I didn’t buy a refurbished phone. I purchased a new one. Why would it be ok for you to send me someone else’s problem phone that you think you’ve fixed? (Verizon guy loses all brownie points forever) He informs me that there is nothing he can do. It’s their policy. Well what I want to know is if it’s there policy why don’t they make it clear. He wasn’t going to tell me I was getting a refurbished phone if I hadn’t asked him. He was just going to send it to me. He then tells me that I can go into a Verizon store and talk to a store manager and see if they would be willing to work with me and give me a new phone.

Well I did just that. I contacted the store manager of the store where I purchased my phone and explained to him what was going on. He is actually willing to exchange my phone for a brand new one. My faith in Verizon renewed a little…until he tells me there’s only one problem. He doesn’t have any 700ps in stock…no stores in my region have any Treo 700ps in stock. I wonder why…could it be because they are due to release the Treo 755p…probably…but I don’t have proof of this. I’ll have to see what happens. For now I’m told if they get any in…they’ll call me. So here I sit with my poor little possessed Treo wondering why oh why did I install that MR update. I mean my phone wasn’t working perfectly before the update…but it sure wasn’t in a complete state of disaster.
